By popular demand, we are proposing a weekend trip to VELIKO TARNOVO, Bulgaria on 24./25.10.
Draft itinerary:
From Bucharest we will be heading south to GIURGIU and cross the border at the RUSE, Bulgaria checkpoint.
From there we will be heading south until we reach the famous BUZLUDZHA MONUMENT in the early afternoon, not without having a lunch break somewhere on the way.
We will then turn to VELIKO TARNOVO where we spend the rest of the afternoon and the evening strolling the narrow streets of Veliko before having a dinner at Shtastliveca Restaurant (or other, tbe).
On Sunday morning we will be visiting the Tsarevets Fortress (optional) and/ or visit other tourist objectives in the are such as Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration of God, Devetashka Cave or Kushuna Falls (depending on mood and weather).
We will then be heading back to RUSE where we go for a walk downtown and have a late lunch or early dinner, depending on when we arrive. Proposal here: “Happy” Grill & Bar.
After that we have about one hour to go before we arrive back in BUCHAREST in the evening.
Transportation
There are two variants:
1. if up to four people sign up, we will be using a private car (happily mine)
2. for a group of up to 9 people we would
2.1. use two private cars or
2.2. rent a minibus for all of us. Actually I think it would be great to have all of us in one bus where we share snacks and storys on the way..
Accommodation
There is an abundance of hotels in Veliko Tarnovo.
We will discuss the details with the group that actually signs up, ideally staying in the same place or nearby
Costs
There will be costs for the transportation: fuel, road tax RO and BG, bridge toll to be shared.
Everybody to cover their accommodation for the night, restaurants, personal expenses.

Notes:
With both Romania and Bulgaria now being in Schengen territory, there are no routine border checks anymore, but they do check random travellers. Valid ID required – your responsibility.
Since 2026 Bulgaria has the EURO as currency. Card payment is widely accepted, but do bring some cash, Euro if you have.
Mobile phone / data: EU Roaming applies, so you are good with your Romanian plan.
